I noticed while I was working on various projects throughout the fall that I seemed to have a slight odor in the forward head. I decided to have a closer look and inspected all of the hoses salt water and fresh water. I didn’t see anything that gave me too much of a concern but decided to change out the waste tank hoses since they looked original and would be due pretty soon anyway. This was a pretty quick fix and a good preventive measure which will prevent a messy future situation. I determined that the smell was caused by standing salt water in the intake line. The intake line is pretty long and due to lack of use in the fall whenever the head was pumped the initial small was stagnant salt water which went away after several pumps. The aft head was a bit slow to clear when pumping so I decided to take it apart and see what I could see. Marine heads are pretty simple devices but you don’t think about the clever engineering that takes place until you take it apart and see how it works, pretty cool. I cleaned and lubed everything and put it back together and made a few adjustments to the stroke length which seems to have helped. Ok this stinky job is over with.
