Joyce and I have both worked for the same company at different locations in Metro Halifax. As a result news of our plans for retirement which included selling everything, buying a sailboat and sailing off into the sunset were well known amongst our colleagues. I am sure we were doubted by many and our sanity was in question by some but never the less we stuck to the plan and did sell our house and had now purchased our floating retirement home. With the purchase of the boat and a season of sailing behind us, curiosity was at an all-time high and we were getting requests from our co-workers to get out for a sail (and see what all the craziness was about). Since in some cases the best laid plans are impromptu ones, I decided on a sunny Thursday morning to put the offer out to a few co-workers to join me for a sail that afternoon. Bruce, Paul and Alyre met me at the boat at 1300hrs and after a brief tour and explanation about the whole sailing thing we were on our way. It is such a kick to see the looks on people’s faces who have never sailed before when the boat starts to heel and surge forward under that breeze (I had explained what was going to happen beforehand), but nevertheless looks of surprise and big smiles were in abundance when Rose Lee started to kick up her heals. The wind was out of the W today at about 14 knots which gave us perfect conditions for a beam reach right out the harbor. Five minutes after we began sailing I offered up the helm to anyone who might be interested and Bruce jumped at the chance. I have noticed over the years that to effectively steer a boat is a skill that comes naturally to some and is mastered over time by others. Bruce was pretty natural at the helm making adjustments for the puffy conditions and steering a great course with small tips from time to time. Aye and Paul enjoyed the foredeck taking lots of pics while I was in charge of refreshments for all. Its great to see colleague’s outside of the work environment and at ease with no pressures and no deadlines just able to live in the moment for a bit. Based on our fun level and ease of conversation I would definitely recommend sailing as a corporate teambuilding exercise, no-kidding. WE eventually had to turn around and were close aboard the entrance to the Marina by 1700hrs and it was time to fire up the motor. Click, click, click, please, please, please, click, click, click nothingL The starter had decided to act up again, I dropped the main and we veered off under the genoa while Bruce continued to steer while I attempted to bypass the solenoid and get the motor going…..nothing. Time for plan B which I had pretty much figured out and practiced, sailing onto the mooring with just the main( however I always had the motor running as a back-up). So it was time to give this a go but I will give the motor one more try while we are sailing over Vrummmm, wow Rose Lee must not have trusted me to take her in with the sails alone, oh well. We returned to the mooring and grabbed it on the 1st try, nice. Today was the 1st time I had ever had anyone sailing on Rose Lee besides Joyce and I and by all accounts it was a great day, enjoyed by all.
